Ministries and Mission

At Elk Grove United Methodist Church we believe in ministering to all people.  Following are some of our ministries.  We hope that you find a place to serve or receive ministry.

Adult Continuing Education
Adult Continuing Education classes are offer every Sunday morning.

Beginnings
A Discussion group on Faith Topics such as "Who is Jesus and Why Should I Care" that meets on Thursday mornings at 10 and the 2nd & 4th Wednesday Nights at & PM.

Bible Study
We offer a Bible Study class led by Pastor Kathy.  The class chooses a book of the Bible to read and discuss together.  There is no homework or prep time necessary.  All interested persons are welcome.

Christianity Today
This group explores ways in which current trends in Christianity reflect modern science and technology, historical research into biblical times and origins, expanding insight into human psychology, moral dilemmas related to economic and cultural globalization, everyday pressures of modern life, and exposure to a wide variety of religions and philosophies. The group examines different interpretations of scripture and Christian tradition and the practical implications for our personal spiritual growth and our engagement with society.

Christmas Caroling
During the Christmas Holiday Season, children, youth, and adults gather together, practice carols, break into small groups, and go caroling at local nursing homes and at the homes of shut-in members.  This is a wonderful opportunity to share our Christmas joy with persons who are ill or unable to get out of their homes.  Afterward we meet for hot chocolate and goodies.

Church Work Days
Several days a year are set aside to clean-up the church by our members.  This may involve yard work, painting, carpentry, scrubbing, organizing the kitchen cupboards, carpet cleaning, and various other tasks that keep our church looking beautiful and inviting to guests.

Confirmation Class
Students (grade 6 - 8) learn about God, Jesus, the Holy Spirit, the Christian faith, the United Methodist Church, and Christian mission and service.  The class visits a Sabbath service at a Jewish Synagogue and goes on 2 weekend retreats.  At the conclusion of the class, each student has the opportunity to decide whether or not they are ready to join the church and make a public commitment to Jesus Christ.

Elk Grove Food Bank
Elk Grove Food Bank is a repository for donated non-perishable food to help those in need in the local Elk Grove community.

Family Promise
This is a ministry that we share with other churches in the area. We participate with Florin United Methodist Church, several times a year, to provide meals, shelter, and support services to families without homes.

Habitat for Humanity
Elk Grove United Methodist Church belongs to the Delta District Chapter for Habitat for Humanity.

Heifer Project International
Heifer Project animals offer hungry families around the world a way to feed themselves and a way to become self-reliant.  Our Acolyte group currently works to provide animals for the Project.

Loaves and Fishes
Loaves and Fishes is a private charity that serves the homeless in downtown Sacramento on a daily basis.  We participate every fourth Saturday of each month by cooking or serving food.

Membership Classes
Membership classes are offered twice a year on Sunday mornings.  Topics include: values of our church, United Methodism, and sharing our spiritual journeys.

Orientation Classes
The Pastor and Membership Care Committee members meet with people new to our congregation.  Anyone interested is invited to attend.

Other Groups meeting at Elk Grove UMC
Regular weekly meetings of AA, NA, and OA are held at the Church.  Please contact the individual organizations for rooms and meeting times.

Pledges of Appreciated Labor (PALS)
The PALS are a group of retired men who come to the church each Friday morning and donate their services to fix, paint, repair, or whatever needs to be done.  We couldn't do without them!

Prayer Chain Ministry
Intercessory prayer that is going to God on behalf of someone in response to our care and concern for each other.  Prayer concerns are initiated via phone call or e-mail.  Ongoing prayer needs are posted on the whiteboard in the church office and listed in the church bulletins.

Sierra Service Project
The youth and young adults of Elk Grove UMC have been actively involved with the Sierra Service Project (SSP) for many years.  SSP has been providing life changing experiences in the Spirit through acts of service in the repair of Native American homes.

Stephen's Ministry

The Teen Life, Faith, and Sexuality Program is offered to Junior High youth, Senior High youth, and their parents.  During the program we explore God’s wonderful gift to humanity.  Much of the program will be done in age level groups and includes: anatomy and physiology, biology, ethics, and responsible decision making.

United Methodist Women
The United Methodist Women (UMW) meet monthly for luncheon, devotions, program, and fellowship.  All women are welcome to share in the fellowship and become better acquainted with each other.  You do not have to be  a member of the church to join this friendly gathering.

United Methodist Volunteers in Mission (UMVIM)
UMVIM is an opportunity for adults to do hands on mission locally, nationally, and globally.  A group from our church built an orphanage in Guatemala.

Women in Management Support Group
