Denominational Dissident Local Member

Adopted by the All Church Conference on November 13, 2012
Note: Since the 2016 General Conference delayed any action on this concern until the newly establish Commission reports to the General Conference, the Denominational Dissident Local Member continues to be an option.

Elk Grove UMC is a diverse, inclusive Christian community equipping people with a faith that works in real life through worship, education, music, fellowship, and service. We believe that everyone is welcome in God’s family and intentionally welcome all through our doors who are welcoming of others. We believe that the 2012 General Conference of the UMC was in error when they voted to continue discrimination against the GBLTQ community and did not remove barriers that prevent the GBLTQ community from full participation in the life of our denomination. We join with Bishop Talbert in his call for Biblical Obedience believing that the time has come for those of us who are faithful to the Gospel of Jesus Christ to do what is required of us.

We understand that there are diverse, faithful and prophetic ways to respond to injustice. Some are called to work for justice from within the denomination; some are called to work for justice alongside or outside of the denomination. We want to honor these ways in our community. Until such a time that the United Methodist Church welcomes and provides for full participation of the GBLTQ Community in the life of the denomination, Elk Grove United Methodist Church will offer two categories of membership:

1)  The first way is to become a member of Elk Grove UMC and the United Methodist Denomination. Potential members are asked to affirm 2 membership questions. The first question receives persons into the membership of the United Methodist Church/denomination:

As members of Christ’s universal Church,
will you be loyal to Christ through The United Methodist Church,
and do all in your power to strengthen its ministries?

The second question receives persons into membership of the local church:

As members of this congregation,
will you faithfully participate in its ministries by your prayers,
your presence, your gifts, your service and your witness?

2)  The second category of membership will be a member of our local congregation, Elk Grove United Methodist Church, and not the United Methodist denomination. This category of membership shall be called Denominational Dissident, Local Member. Persons being received into local membership shall be asked about membership in the congregation:

As members of this congregation,
will you faithfully participate in its ministries by your prayers,
your presence, your gifts, your service and your witness?

Both categories of membership will be reported to the Annual Conference on the yearly reports. Members in both categories are eligible for full participation in the life of our church including leadership roles with the exception of Lay Member to the Annual Conference Session. This policy will be implemented immediately.
